Cetemmsa. A smart T-shirt for people with chronic conditions

With a budget of 4.2 million Euros Cetemmsa leads a European research project to create a T-shirt enabling remote monitoring of vital signs of people with chronic conditions. The research project has been estimated to last three years. But the product will surely benefit many elderly consumers, with a new resource that will help them feel safer and more confident.
The T-shirt will have sensor threads that will control heartbeat, respiratory rhythm, and body temperature so users will be able to travel or leave their homes without having to visit the doctor for routine controls. The doctor or health-care professional will be receiving data on the Internet. The product will also serve to remind users about medication time and methods, with information reaching them on their TV or PDA.

The project is based on the needs currently caused in Europe by demographics. The number of elderly people grows while that of young inhabitants decreases. This, in combination with the greater need of medical treatments makes the current healthcare system situation very complex, so the European Union is setting up projects that seek to bring improvements to the lifestyle of elderly people.
Prevention and an efficient management of health-care services are based in the concept of health programs available from home.
July 15th and 16th were the dates of the first meetings at the facilities of Cetemmsa, in Mataró. All participants gathered to define the various action fields. Another meeting in Vienna was held in late September, coinciding with an international forum.
